Spectacular Light

It’s amazing how God can take a plain, grey piece of rock and shine the morning light on it and it becomes one of the most beautiful sights to behold.

I’ve had the privilege of growing up in Colorado. Though I moved away for awhile and discovered there is beauty everywhere, I returned to the mountains and they continually teach me amazing lessons!

Pikes Peak is one of the most well-known mountain tops in the United States. It is, after all, “America’s Mountain”!

I’ve seen it from nearly every angle.

Our family used to own a guest lodge on the backside of this magnificent mountain. Guests would eagerly arrive to view Pikes Peak from the large glass windows along the entire back side of the lodge; they were always disappointed at first.

Pikes Peak looked drab and, well, shorter than they expected from our vantage point. When you’re looking at Pikes Peak from an elevation of over 9000 ft, the 14,115′ peak just isn’t as impressive!

These days, I live at the base of the mountain and it towers impressively over our city. Some moments it looks rather grey and boring, but most of the time, it takes my breath away. My favorite moments are when dark rain clouds hover above, casting a shadow, but there’s enough light to pull out all the details of the green pine trees and deep crevices that seem to magically appear only in this unique situation.

This particular day, Pikes Peak is pink with the welcome of the morning. It’s like God is saying, “Good morning! Today is magnificent and I did this all for you!”

It made me think that God can take anything unattractive, shine His light on it, and it becomes spectacular!

I don’t know about you, but there are many moments when I feel less than attractive. Whether it’s because I’m having a bad hair day or I’ve just grieved my spirit and the Holy Spirit with my careless words or actions.

Watching the mountains catch fire in the morning sun is a great reminder that God’s mercy IS new every morning and that we are a reflection of His glory.

Thank you, Father, that Your light makes me spectacular!
